Ziggy's Movie Matinee July 28: Godzilla Minus One
'It was like a prehistoric dinosaur turned monster. The local inhabitants called it Godzilla.'
If you joined last evening’s Wonkette Movie Night and watched the original Godzilla (1954) you will immediately see the connections between this one and the original, as the story is basically the same. The benefit of time has allowed the creators of Godzilla Minus One to give us the Godzilla movie we’ve been waiting for!
On March 10, 2024 Godzilla finally earned an Oscar. Winning for “Best Visual Effects” 70 years after the first big G stomped out of the sea. Giving the movie a much more realistic feel than its current competitors, the effects team used CGI being stylistically similar to that used in the 90’s.
This is the scary Godzilla, the monster that is relentless and seemingly indestructible. Destroying boats and chomping on people in post-war Japan, this Kaiju will wreak havoc. All the while the humans fleeing the beast are dealing with the horrors not inflicted by an animal but by their fellow humans.
Godzilla Minus One stars Minami Hamabe, Ryunosuke Kamiki, Sakura Andô and Munetaka Aoki. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki.
Godzilla Minus One is available with subscription on Netflix. $5.99 in the usual places.
As a bonus I offer up the Godzilla cartoon from 1978. Produced by Hanna-Barbera from 1978-81. This is episode 13 from season 1, broken into 3 parts.
The next matinee will be Aug. 11, with the Wonkette Movie Night on Aug. 10th being Tank Girl. I haven’t decided yet what the next movie it will be, but I will announce it soon!
That is such a great movie! hope you all had as much fun as I did.
Let's do it again in two weeks. Not sure what we will watch but it will be a good time like always!

According to Yamazaki, his Godzilla would remain close to the themes of Ishirô Honda's original film, stating, "I love the original Godzilla, and I felt I should stay true to that spirit, addressing the issues of war and nuclear weapons." Gareth Edwards, director of Godzilla (2014), attended a screening of the film and described a feeling of jealousy while watching it, stating, "This is what a Godzilla movie should be like."
